Synopsis

The Trial is one of the most famous works by Franz Kafka. Written in 1914–1915 and published after Kafka’s death in 1925, the novel explores the unsettling experience of an individual confronting an incomprehensible and bureaucratic system.

The story begins when Josef K., a bank clerk, is unexpectedly arrested one morning by mysterious officials. Although he is not imprisoned and is allowed to continue his normal life, he is informed that he is under investigation. Strangely, no one tells him what crime he has committed.

As Josef K. attempts to defend himself, he becomes entangled in a confusing and endless legal process controlled by a distant and powerful court system. The more he tries to understand the charges against him, the deeper he falls into a maze of bureaucracy, secrecy, and uncertainty.

Through this surreal and unsettling narrative, Kafka explores themes such as authority, guilt, alienation, and the struggle of individuals within oppressive systems. The novel’s atmosphere of confusion and anxiety gave rise to the term “Kafkaesque,” which describes situations that are illogical, bureaucratic, and nightmarishly complex.

Today, The Trial is considered one of the most important works of modern literature, admired for its philosophical depth and haunting portrayal of justice and power.
